Proprietary CMS to WordPress with the design intact, then a full revamp in 2023
Challenge
Down Under Endeavours plans tailor-made vacations to Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific, the kind of trips where a traveler wants the road less traveled and still wants to see it all. The website is where those trips start: sample itineraries, destination guides, and the quote request that puts a traveler in touch with a travel designer.
When cre8 took it on, the site ran on a proprietary CMS that nobody could extend. The team wanted to publish itineraries and offers themselves, and they wanted the site to work on a phone. The move had to happen without a redesign, and without losing the leads the site was already producing.
Approach
Replatform first, keep the design. cre8 moved the site off the proprietary system onto WordPress, carrying the existing design and content across and making the templates mobile-friendly along the way. Itineraries and packages became a searchable catalog the team could edit, and quote requests flowed into the company’s marketing platform instead of an inbox. The site went live on WordPress in September 2014.
Revamp on the same platform. By 2023 the business had outgrown the first build. cre8 redesigned the site from the homepage down: a destinations hub, a new package template and editor built around what travelers compare (days, price, inclusions, traveler tips), sorting and filtering across the catalog, and a shorter quote form that asks for dates and budget up front. Content was migrated into the new structure and the revamped site launched November 12, 2023. Because the platform didn’t change, the team kept publishing through the switch.
Keep running it. cre8 provides ongoing support: WordPress and plugin updates, the ActiveCampaign integration behind the quote forms, and in 2026 a move to managed WordPress hosting at Nexcess with Cloudflare in front. Since then the work has been conversion pieces, like the partner and press bar that now runs across the homepage and destination pages, rather than platform work.
Outcome
- Two platform changes in one relationship, both without a rebuild from scratch: proprietary CMS to WordPress in 2014, then a full revamp on that platform in 2023.
- A trip catalog the team edits themselves: itineraries, packages, offers, and destination pages, all in WordPress.
- Quote requests land in ActiveCampaign, where the travel designers work, with the traveler’s dates and budget already captured.
- The site’s sister brand, Africa Endeavours, runs on the same build, so improvements ship to both.
